Department of Structural and Geotechnical Engineering

The Department of Structural and Geotechnical Engineering (DISG) has a distinguished history and an excellence tradition in research, teaching and service to the community, since 1873.

As for scientific research, three main areas can be identified: Solid and structural mechanics, Structural engineering and Geotechnical Engineering.
The courses belonging to these three areas are offered in a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programmes.

DISG is responsible for the Civil Engineering program, for the Civil Engineering master program and for the Project and Construction Management of Building Systems master program.

Photonics Micro and Nanostructures Laboratory

The Photonics Micro and Nanostructures Laboratory, which is part of the Technologies Applications for Security and Health Division in the Fusion and Technologies for Nuclear Safety and Security Department, mainly carries out research and development activities on photonics and nanotechnology.

In particular, it develops functionalised sensor systems, based on fibre-optic technologies, for monitoring structural and environmental parameters on monumental complexes and surfaces, scientific and industrial facilities and for biomedical applications. It deals with the design, realisation and characterisation of multilayer light-emitting devices and the development of new solid-state radiation detectors for imaging and dosimetry (X-rays, gamma rays, neutrons, protons, etc.). It carries out synthesis, optical and spectroscopic characterisation and functionalisation of nanomaterials. The main fields of application include photonics, space, energy, cultural heritage and health.

Technologies for the Dynamics of Structures and the Prevention of seismic and hydrogeological risk Laboratory

The Technologies for the Dynamics of Structures and the Prevention of seismic and hydrogeological risk Laboratory of ENEA carries out experimental verifications of materials and technologies, and validation of numerical models with seismic tests on vibrating tables, including monumental structures undergoing restoration.

It verifies damage to monumental buildings, carries out studies on the reduction of risks due to natural phenomena and systems for the mitigation of the effects on buildings of historical-artistic interest, through innovative anti-seismic systems.

Critical Infrastructure Analysis and Protection Laboratory

The activities of the Critical Infrastructure Analysis and Protection Laboratory (TERIN-SEN-APIC), which is part of the Energy Technologies and Renewable Sources Department (TERIN), have been oriented, for more than 15 years, on the development of technologies for monitoring and risk analysis of Critical Infrastructures (all the technological and energy networks that enable the production and dispatching of essential services to citizens, as well as mobility road and rail networks, and structures or buildings considered strategic or sensitive).

These activities range from the development of solutions (in particular software and data integration from different sources in the creation of advanced database) for Operators of Critical Infrastructure and Public Administration, who have competences and responsibilities from the point of view of the management and protection of these networks and infrastructure.

Structural Laboratory

The structural laboratory of the Engineering Department of Roma Tre University has expertise and equipment specific for development and testing on materials, strengthening systems and structural elements.

It has a wide experience in the field of construction materials and strengthening systems with innovative technologies and it is authorized to perform official tests for the qualification and the acceptance of composite materials such as FRPs and FRCMs. Within the laboratory are carried out research activities aiming to the development of innovative experimental methods, such as those resorting to optical systems correlating digital images for the acquisition pf displacements and deformations.

National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia in Rome

The National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia in Rome was established in 1889 by Felice Bernabei, prominent archaeologist and member of the parliament of the Italian Kingdom, in the magnificent villa built between 1550 and 1555 by Pope Julius III, born Giovanni Maria Ciocchi del Monte.

The first collection of the Museum encompassed pre-Roman antiquities belonging to Etruscans and other Italic peoples (in particular: Faliscans, Umbrians, Latins and Sabines). During the 20th century, after an initial autonomy, the Museum became the main office of the archaeological superintendence for Southern Etruria, an area hosting the primary Etruscan cities: Veio, Cerveteri, Tarquinia and Vulci. Accordingly, Villa Giulia has become the most important Etruscan Museum in the world, enshrining more than 6000 objects in its 50 rooms, tallying more than 3000 m2. In 2016 the Museum was given scientific and administrative autonomy and was recognised as an institute of “relevant national interest” for its extraordinary history and cultural relevance.
