The project

About the project

The progetto MONALISA entails the experimental development of the seismic isolation technique for its application to art objects and its extension to the protection from a wider range of vibrations, including those generated by road and rail traffic. These conditions require innovative devices, different from standard productions, because applied to small-mass objects and used for the protection from non-seismic vibrations. The isolation intervention will be integrated with a monitoring system for a continuous control and the sending of alert messages when attention threshold are exceeded.

The project involves shake table tests, under earthquake and traffic excitations, of the isolation system inclusive of a 3D replica of the “Sarcophagus of the Spouses”. The system will then be applied to the sarcophagus enshrined at the National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia in Rome and vibrations induced by road and rail traffic will be measured before and after the intervention.

Project admissible costs amount to 228.193,17 euros, covered by the funding bodies up to 187.961,18 euro; additional non-admissible costs amount to 23.754,00 euros, thus delivering a total in-kind cofinancing of 63.985,99 euros.
The partnership is made by three research institutions (Sapienza Università di Roma, ENEA, Università degli Studi Roma Tre) and a Latium-based private company (Somma LLC).

Goals of the project

The funding of the research and development proposal progetto MONALISA allows attaining several goals belonging to the Culture Area Specialisation within the Smart Specialization Strategy (S3) of Latium Regional Government.

Development

Developing a rapid preliminary assessment of seismic vulnerability of museum objects, including a survey form, a low-cost and contacless geometric survey procedure delivering a point cloud, analisi strutturali a livelli di complessità crescenti (Knowledge Theme of the Regional S3)

Experimental development and validation in relevant environment by means of shake table tests (Technology readiness level, TRL6) of an earthquake vibration isolation capable of protecting museum objects thus reducing damage to cultural heritage (Conservation Theme of the Regional S3), thus reducing restoration costs funded by the taxpayers

Integration and Effectiveness

Integrating the procetion from earthquake vibrations with the proection from traffic vibrations, delivering a validation in relevant evironment (Technology readiness level, TRL6) avoiding additional damage to cultural heritage (Conservation Theme of the Regional S3)

Integrating the isolation intervention with monitoring system capable of detecting accelerations at the base of the artefact to be protected and the exceedance of critical thresholds (Management Theme of the Regional S3)

Demonstrating in operative environment (TRL7) the effective of the device on a masterpiece in its museum location (Conservation and Management Theme of the Regional S3)

Indirect results

>Among the indirect results of the Progetto MONALISA there is the strengthening of the synergy between the scientific skills of the Research Institutions and the technology know-how as well as in situ implementation ability of a Latium-based private company. This synergy will allow widening the company production, with reference to both the objects to be protected and the excitations to be accounted for. Accordingly, it will be possible to access new markets, both in high seismicity areas and in infrastructural high-growth countries wherein traffic vibrations can be a relevant hazard for museum objects. Accordingly, it will be possible to access new markets, both in high seismicity areas and in infrastructural high-growth countries wherein traffic vibrations can be a relevant hazard for museum objects.

Moreover, it is envisioned that during the project development new young researchers in research Institutions and young practitioners in the private Company will be educated and possibly enrolled, based on the acquired scientific and technological knowledge for the protection of museum objects valuable on the national and international market labour.

Other results are those of contributing to environmental sustainability by means of the rapid mass transportation at the core of the corresponding national strategy and of supporting the application of Cerveteri 2021 Italian Culture Capital (shortlisted among the top ten).
